Stand Up To Racism Conference – Sheffield

On Saturday 13th May, members of Barnsley NUT attended the Stand Up To Racism conference in Sheffield. Around 100 people attended the conference, with almost 20 attending from Barnsley, including several asylum seekers.
Speakers included Moazzem Begg (who was detained in Guantanamo Bay for three years before being released without charge), Muhammed Taj (from Unite and the Trade Union Council), Weyman Bennett (from Stand up to Racism), Natalie Bennett (from the Green Party) and a Labour councillor from Rotherham. All the speakers spoke powerfully about the need to resist racism and Islamaphobia.
Four workshops enabled people to discuss particular issues in more detail: welcoming migrant workers and refugees, the need to challenge the Prevent strategy and the fight against fascism.
SUTR has launched a statement “Keep Racism out of the election” which it is asking candidates to sign.
At the end of the Conference delegates held up Defend Education placards to support the NUT campaign.
