The House of Commons Education Committee has just released a devastating report on primary assessment. Its central messages: ‘this high-stakes system does not improve teaching and learning in primary schools’ and ‘setting extremely challenging targets only leaves many students feeling they have failed’.
Just before Easter, the Union launched its alternative vision of primary assessment with More Than A Score (MTAS) partners. The Education Committee fully supports most of the criticisms that MTAS makes. The Government can no longer pretend that the problems of the system can be resolved with minor changes.
